“The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an environmental disaster. Right now there is an area larger than the size of the continental United States in the Pacific Ocean between California and Japan that is filled with trash, mostly plastic, an estimated 7million tons of it. The problem with plastic is that it does not biodegrade. “Besides killing wildlife, plastic and other debris damage boat and submarine equipment, litter beaches, discourage swimming and harm commercial and local fisheries, and most importantly is a threat to human health as well.” This plastic vortex is affecting the beaches and oceans all over the world. It is our own fault and sadly no one knows about it.
Awareness—people need to start paying attention. There is not much we can do about the plastic that is in our ocean’s now, however, we can reduce our plastic waste to prevent this issue from getting worse. Start at home by cutting down on the amount of plastic you use. Simply start using glass or aluminum containers. “Every year over 60 billion tons of plastic are produced, much of it for one-time use, and less then 5 percent of the world’s plastics are recycled.” Do your part in making the world a better place for future generations—reduce, reuse and recycle.
